I can’t believe 2017 is almost over. Feels just like yesterday we celebrated the new year. It has been a good year with lots of different interior trends, but the big question is; What is coming into 2017 with us? Let’s take a look at what the experts predicts for 2017!
OUT: Pretty much everyone agreed on this one: Copper’s out. “Warm metals like copper, brass and rose gold will continue to be on trend for autumn/winter 2016, but as we move into summer 2017 you’ll see a shift away from this super polished look,” says Diane Cocksey, Senior Interior Decorator at Freedom. Buh-bye copper!
OUT: Marble is out too according to Cocksey; “Marble has had a good run, but it’s time for a change”. Say it ain’t so.
OUT: Subway tiles are out. Many bathrooms and kitchens feature the beautiful subway tile due to its affordable price. However, its popularity will decrease in 2017 according to Lauren Macer of Sisalla Interior Design. “We have seen them at our local cafe and basically they’re everywhere.”
OUT: The Moroccan pouf is out. According to Ginny MacDonald, design director at Emily Henderson Design, the Moroccan pouf has been out for a while now but 2017 is making it official. “I feel these went out in 2015, but I’m still seeing them used a lot,” she says.
OUT: The all-white (cool grays) look is out. Finally. Tali Roth, interior designer at Homepolish, says that 2017 will be the year where people will be more experimental with color. “The past few years, we have all been loving the wonderful Scandinavian influences, so there has been a lot of whites and grays and super-cool tones. I think people are craving warmer tones, and we will see colors such as taupe, mink, and mustard really make a huge comeback next year.”
OUT: This is one trend I am not ready to give up just yet (not ever to be honest). Open plan living is out in 2017. According to Domain, defined living spaces are returning to modern homes as customers seek more private home layouts in 2017. “As people have now lived with the open plan living areas incorporating kitchen, living, dining and even study areas, they have found problems with acoustics and cooking smells through the space.”
IN: As we say goodbye to navy and midnight blues, dark green will become the biggest trend of 2017. It’s time to move to the dark side according to MacDonald. “Over the last few months, I’ve seen tons of dark green pop up in kitchens, living rooms, and furniture.”
IN: Cork is making a comeback! Cork is a stylish material that adds warmth and texture to spaces, and 2017 will see cork used everywhere. Macer predicts that “cork could be used to clad entire walls in the home office and used to pin notes to” in 2017.
IN: Bye bye fiddle leaf fig, the olive tree is taking over! The fig tree will be substituted for a new statement plant in 2017 according to Emma Blomfield, stylist at online homewares retailer TheHome.com.au. “The staple indoor plant needs to have an update. Move over fiddle leaf figs, the olive tree is coming.”
IN: The beds will change drastically in 2017. Upholstered bedheads are the new thing! “They’ve been a staple in luxury hotel bedrooms and celebrity homes for a while, but now we’re all falling head over heels for the bedhead trend,” says Blomfield.
IN: Bronze is the new copper. Roth thinks that “bronze is going to be the new It metal of 2017”. “It plays well with other finishes and colors and is a little bit more on the neutral side. Mixing metals always looks chic.”
